DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council
The DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council of Arcadia was organized in 2006
to promote the arts in DeSoto County, Florida. Our goal is to make all
of the arts — visual, literary and performing — an important part of our
community and accessible to everyone.
The group features several activities
for member artists, including:
- Monthly meetings, often including a featured
speaker, demonstration or field trip
- Monthly Art Walks from October through
April in downtown Arcadia, where artists can display and sell their works
- An annual art show in January with several cash prizes awarded
- The second Rio de la Paz Festival
and the Art of the River Show, coming in Feb. 2014
- New this year, the
Arcadia Plein Air Paint-out and Workshop, coming in Nov. 2013
- Groups of
artists who concentrate on specific areas (e.g., painters, writers, photographers),
share their work with others, critique work and join in field trips
newsletter with information about DAHC's aactivities, sales and shows
of other area art groups, and helpful tips
- Opportunities to volunteer to foster the arts in our commmunity, including
the weekly Children's Art program at the DeSoto County Library

The second Rio de la Paz Festival and Art of the River!
Feb. 7-8. 2014
This event features over $1,700 in cash prizes plus purchase awards for artist in two- and three-dimentsional categories and photography.
Original works of art depicting the natural environment or the rich cultural heritage of the Peace River region, past or present, will be displayed inside at South Florida State College. A Friday night reception will be held Feb. 7 to announce prizes and allow sponsors with "Art Bucks" to purchase works of art.
A Saturday festival on the grounds of South Florida State College will include a variety of vendors incouding food, arts and crafts, nonprofit displays, environmental features, business displays and more, along with live musical entertainment.

Arcadia Plein Air Paint-out
Our first-ever en plein air event will feature artists painting
all over downtown Arcadia, from the Opera House to the Courthouse, from coffee shop to the many antique shops. The Arcadia Plein Air Paint-out takes place Nov. 16, 2013. If you're new to plein air painting or want to sharpen your skills, sign up for the Plein Air Workshop on Nov. 2, 2013.
Cash prizes will be awarded the same day at a reception at the Martin Art Gallery, with an opportunity for works to be sold.
